Paul GauthierPaul started painting in 1966, with his father Joachim (a close contemporary and friend of the Group of Seven) and a number of senior artists, including A.J.Casson, Alan Collier, Anthony Law, Bruno Cavallo, during fall sketching trips. Their influence and mentoring proded Paul into seeking out the more rugged terrain of Canada, from Gros Morne Newfoundland, to the high arctic in Nunavut. Many excursions to Algonquin Park, Algoma,Georgian Bay,Gatineau,Killarney and other Ontario wilderness sites have been recorded in oils and watercolour. Five voyages to the Arctic and six trips out west to the Rockies and Western Mountains have resulted in numerous paintings and sketches.Paul was commissioned by the North Channel Preservation Society in 1987, to produce a limited edition serigraph of one of A.J.Casson's painting of Baie Fine. Mr. Casson assisted Paul in the artistic control of the print. Subsequently, the area called Casson Peak is recognized as an historical site, due in large part to the efforts of the sales of this print and the media attention derived in order to protect this vulnerable section of the KIllarney Range. Paul's oeuvre has been exhibited in numerous shows in Canadian cities. His pieces belong to corporate and private collections, including Husky Oil, Texaco, Bank of Montreal, Toronto Board of Trade, IBM Canada, Weston Group, Canadian General Electric, Merrill Lynch Co., Royal Canadian Geographical Society, Nortel, Crown Life Insurance, Sears Chicago, H.R.H.
