Phil Abernethy
Phil has studied art independently for over a decade. He came to metal forging through his first craft, traditional clock-making. While restoring early English clocks, Phil often made the missing parts. That beginning, coupled with a strong desire to express his ideas brought Phil to creating forged metal sculptures.
These sculptures are created by hand, using traditional blacksmithing techniques. Finishes are often heat-coloured with an open flame which produces the subtle oxide colours. Forging is a physical, intense and direct method of working with metal.
Phil, a member of the Artist-Blacksmiths Association of North America has created unique sculptures which show movement and have a quality of weightlessness which defies the heavy metal that it is created from.
Phil’s work has been commissioned for a number of architectural/corporate settings and resides in selected private collections throughout the world.
