Ron Decker is from Ship Cove on the Northern Peninsula. That's just across from the Viking site at L'Anse aux Meadows. And it's the inspiration for some of his work.
Ron Decker grew up in sight of L'Anse aux Meadows. "It was part of history," he says. "Everybody knows it's the only Viking site in North America. And I lived across the bay from it. I think that was the interest right there.
One of his paintings shows what could have been Leif Ericsson's boat arriving at L'Anse aux Meadows a thousand years ago.
But it's Norstead, the new replica Viking village at L'Anse aux Meadows, that's inspired him most. And he's painted a 3 foot by 8 foot picture of the site. Cathy Cabot-Letto designed the Norstead village. "I was astounded," she says. "I was amazed. I walked into the room. I saw the painting and I was speechless for half an hour."
